This blog is to introduce the life in Tottori Prefecture of Japan.
You might have been to / live in/ plan a visit to concrete-jungle Tokyo or traditional Kyoto. Indeed, these cities are fascinating, but you might also want to explore Japanese countryside. You'll find natural wonders to compete with Japanese cultural treasures :)

People in the old times believed that it was the spirits in the mountain who echoes their voice when they shout at the sides of the mountains.
The phenomenon has been called "yamabiko" (山彦 やまびこ) or "Kodama" (木霊 こだま) in Japan. In Tottori, it was believed that the mountain spirit "Yobiko" (呼子 よびこ)was the one who made this yamabiko phenomenon.

Yobiko plays a role of a messenger for Kitaro in "Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro" because he has big voice.
The statue of Yobiko (Yamabiko) on Mizuki Shigeru Road in Sakaiminato.

i also found some old paintings of Yamabiko.

Adapted from Hyakkai-Zukan (百怪図巻, "The Illustrated Volume of a Hundred Demons") by Sawaki Suushi (1737).

Adapted from Gazu Hyakki Yakō (画図百鬼夜行, "The Illustrated Night Parade of A Hundred Demons") by Toriyama Sekien (1776).
